drop domain server, simplify to multipoint & file servrer?

I posted this before to General but no responses so trying here and File Servers.

Long question about how to minimize in-house servers so as to minimize security holes and maintenance and personnel time on IT.
* As a children's services charity we have access to WinServer 2012 R2 Std for very cheap. Also WinServer 2012 Multi-point Premium cheap.
* We also get Office 365 Enterprise very cheap. Our email/exchange is through it.
* We have a ton of shared files on an old in-house server. Needs replacing, updating. Robust nightly data backups.
* Offices in 2 cities and need to coordinate that pool of files.
* 25-30 employees total, not all on at once. Some don't use in-house resources, just Office 365.
* Accounting program must run on a server with SQL (just basic MS SQL).
* Other than that there are virtually no server functions used. In fact some people bring in their own laptops which are Home edition so are not on the domain. I just make their win logon match a user on the server to get them permission to the file sections they need.
* The few users who need to work from home/outside use their home computer to a remote desktop session on their work computer.
* We keep a few files in Office 365 SharePoint shared site. Files like sign-up sheets multiple people need to modify at once, or that outside volunteers need browser access to. Nobody wants to move our entire pool of shared files there. Too slow and awkward.
* Would rather not continue to maintain domain controller or full function servers with all the endless keeping up with security issues and such. Would love to move it all to a cloud server and RDP sessions and the server maintained by a big outfit, but such services either leave maintenance to the user or are too expensive. Especially compared with trying to make the most of what we get cheap.

Two scenarios I'd love feedback on:
1. File servers
Just enable file server functions. No domain. DNS/DHCP/port-forwarding via business class router (we have). VLANs via a good switch (we have). No outside data access except via RDP sessions to in-house computers. Would need another file server in the other city and some way to sync. Not sure how to do that. Might be a big issue. Also means an outside data connection and related security issues.
2. File server and RDP server
One file server at main office. Also a MultiPoint server. The few people in the other city who need access to the pool of shared files could do that work via RDP sessions. No server or storage at the other city. No outside data access except RDP sessions.
In either case we'll figure a way around the accounting/SQL issue. Maybe use the vendor's cloud version.
We lean on Office 365 for other features, video conf, shared calendars on smart phones, etc. but isolated from our core files store.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Tom

Can't Find Server on Multipoint Manager

I have two servers running Multipoint 2012 Premium. They are operating off the same switch and running on identical hardware. When I go to add in another server in Multipoint Manager, the software can't find the server in a search. I've also tried to manually enter the IP address of the server, and it won't connect that way either.

Any suggestions?

ThinGlobal zero clients cannot connect to WMS 2012

I installed a Wyse driver for their zero client after I had already had ThinGlobal zero clients running.  There was an error with the Wyse driver so I uninstalled it.  Now the ThinGlobal clients aren't found by WMS 2012.  I have reinstalled a WMS zero client manager from Generic but the clients still don't show up as stations.

Multipoint Manager not showing stations - stations stop responding

I have  Multipoint Server 2012 premium that is running as a HyperV VM.  I have a 6 computer patron lab running on some decent HP thin clients.  I have the clients RDP into the multipoint server, and then they each use a different local account patron1...patron6.

Everything was running fine for about a month.  Then, I got a warning on my Multipoint Manager interface saying I needed to add the CALs for my stations.   It took another week for my licensing information to get to me, but it appears I successfully activated 6 "Windows MultiPoint Server CAL - One Station". Since then, We have had daily issues with our lab.

It seems that if a patron is on a workstation for about 1 hour, it will simply freeze, and become unresponsive.  When I connect to the multipoint server to log off the session thorugh the Multipoint Manager, none of my workstations appear under 'stations'.  If I reboot the server, My Multipoint Manager interface shows all the stations just how it should.  But then, after a couple hours, one of the workstations will lock up, and then I will not be able to see the stations visable in the Multipoint Manager.

What do we think could be going on?

Screen Saver Lock-out

Our WMS 2011 Premium server boots and then after the association of the mouse and keyboard the screen saver starts and then simply moves when the mouse moves or the keyboard is touched.

There is no way to get around the screen saver and the system is not accessible from any other station.

We can start the system in safe mode and log in, but not apply changes or update the system.

While I am teaching the class with video, I could easily project my screen to the children. However, neither station receives audio. Is the WMS2012 designed this way? If so, how can I solve the problem? Thanks

Can't download 2011 Eval

Hi All,

When trying to download WMS 2011 Eval from:

download.microsoft.com/download/A/1/C/A1CB630F-F937-4D4B-B383-C4E3DE1F34A1/EN-US_WMS_PREM_EVAL_InstallDVD.iso

(Source link is microsoft.com/en-au/download/details.aspx?id=8518)

The download repeatedly resets. Tried multiple computers, browsers & ISPs.

Used a download manager, and found the server's file size sometimes differs when attempting to try again!

Can someone get that fixed up please?

In addition : The alternate link in the details section doesn't work anymore either.

I've just had the run-around from tech support saying that they cannot assist with evaluation versions... apparently that includes even being able to download the product!

Thanks.

Video Preformance

What would people recommend for a USB device for Multipoint server to produce reasonable You Tube and video streaming?

I would like to be able to run dual monitors on each display station or I would just use the direct video card connection which I know is the best video quality.

I saw Ncomputing zero clients but the ones I saw use VGA connectors and I would prefer DVI.  Are there any really good devices with dual DVI connectors?

Office products which version can be installed on Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 Premium ?

hi:

can you have a look this. It look like can install Microsoft office in windows multipoint server 2012 primium

Major Capabilities

  • Centralised administration: The MultiPoint Manager application allows administrators to set up and manage Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server user stations. Administrators can create accounts for an unlimited number of users, who can access their customised desktop and settings by logging in to any user station.
  • User monitoring: The MultiPoint Dashboard application allows non-administrators, such as classroom instructors or computer lab staff, to monitor and interact with user stations. Dashboard users can view user activity, block users, limit web access, and project their desktop activities to all users. They can also open chat sessions with users and take control of a user's desktop to provide hands-on assistance.
  • System restoration: Disk Protection protects the host computer by discarding changes made during user sessions and restoring the host computer to a "last known good state" after reboot.
  • Shared software: Software programs installed on the host computer can be accessed from any user station, without separately installing the software for each user. (Note that Microsoft Office and other Microsoft programs require a separate license for each user station in a Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server environment. Other software manufacturers may have their own licensing requirements for shared computing environments.)
  • Desktop virtualisation: Administrators can create Microsoft Windows 7 or Microsoft Windows 8 client virtual machines to map to MultiPoint stations. These virtual machines can run software that might not be compatible with a 64-bit server operating system.
  • Active Directory support: Microsoft Windows MultiPoint Server can join an Active Directory domain and also participate in Group Policy and other domain functions.

Extend desktop to thin client

$

Hi,

This is an odd question but is it possible to use a thin client pc "hooked" up to my main pc through Multipoint server as an extended monitor connected to my desktop as opposed to a separate session. I have a thin client and monitor mounted on the wall to display something in my classroom but would like an easier way to access it than taking control of it to display what I need. Thanks!!

screensaver for remote desktops

Hi All,

Is it possible to turn on the screensaver on a Multipoint 2011 server?  I want to have the screensaver kick in for remote desktop users after a few minutes of inactivity and require a password to get back on.  It didn't look to me like the screensaver was usable?  Maybe I missed something?

Thanks,

Paul
