We have two WMS 2012 Premium servers (currently with 24 Wyse E02 Zero Clients) joined to a domain with a 3rd server running Windows Server 2012 R2 which is the file server and domain controller. The active directory domain is required as there are 150+ users that will be using the WMS clients. We are using group policy to enable folder redirection for all users (required to manage user profiles, documents, etc.) and to restrict user access to OS functions that are unnecessarily available by default on the WMS 2012 system (for a solution geared toward school/library settings, one would think that basic "lock-down" policies restricting access to non-essential OS functions would have been included in WMS by default).
The problem we have run into is that the Start Screen (Windows 8?) presented by WMS 2012 doesn't work with redirected folders. Shortcuts that are pinned to a user's Start Screen or Taskbar seem to be local to the WMS server connected to the client where the user is logged in. For example, when a user logs in via a client connected to WMS 2012 #1 and pins a shortcut to their Start Screen or Taskbar, then later logs in via a client connected to WMS 2012 #2, the shortcut is not present on their Start Screen or Taskbar. As far as I can tell, other functions of redirected folders appear to be working (i.e. saving files into the redirected Documents folder works when logged in via clients connected to either WMS 2012 #1 or #2).
What am I missing? This is such a basic function of WMS 2012 - creating/saving a shortcut on a user's Start Screen /Taskbar – why isn’t this working? Is there a setting/configuration I missed? Wouldn't any WMS 2012 deployment where multiple WMS servers are required (i.e. more than 20 stations) run into this same problem? Have any others experienced this? If so, how have you fixed this?
